YOUCHOOSE: An Interactive Short-Film Lesson Medium

YouChoose is a self-scheme of ideology to impart new ways of connecting to students the lessons in the school and involving them to form an art of their own. This module presents each ideology that influences the main idea of the self-pondered Lesson Medium and how it can be demonstrated, used, and applied as a teaching scheme.

Short Film, Series Shorts and Youtube Media Interface

Short films are movies that may be handled by an indie or a large production which was calibrated to tell a story for less than an hour. Short films tend to rise on YouTube as YouTube extends its bandwidth from 10 minutes to approximately 4 hours (comprising of analog data to digital format last 2007).

Series-shorts tend to arise way back 2006 as YouTube artist tend to gather story patterned in series shown on television to gain more views and subscribers.

The difference between short-film and series-shorts is that the film itself has all elements of story within a shorter period of time. Unlike with series shorts, each part of a story is entitled to a specific time within a specific release and the story is divided into volumes or episodes. YouTube Media Interface was first introduced way back 2007 as part of YT’s web growth. It is basically an integration of other social networking sites to stay connected within the YT artist that you subscribed to. Integration of interface links in each subscriber channel makes it more convenient to spread the video, be viral and stay connected to the creator of the channel.
After presenting YMI (Youtube Media Interface) to YT users, they developed next one viral way of interacting to watchers without going to the YT artist main channel. This interaction was named as annotations; it is a quick access/editable form of link that can connect you not just to various sites related to that specific YT artist but it as well gives you site access to other videos which definitely had been the foundation of Interactive Shortfilms. A quick click will definitely be a fast way to connect videos. Series shorts had then been connected by annotations by YT artist to give flash backs or thriller trailers to what would and had happened on the story.

Influence of Youtube
YouTube started its subscribers and followers for less than 3.7 million ‘way back 2002. It then grows and started to promulgate as netizens tend to increase as well. YouTube has been consistently the number 1 video streaming site on North and South America and as well as to some parts of Asia. YouTube has more than 1 billion unique users visit YouTube each month. It has been observed as well that 6 billion hours of video are watched each month on YouTube; approximately an hour for every person on Earth and 50% more than last year. YouTube is localized in 56 countries and across 61 languages. With all of these facts said YouTube not only influences people yet it creates influential people as well. Survey has posted that 8 out of 10 known Hollywood artist would definitely have a maintained channel for business and talent show case. It has been perceived in the Philippines that mainly ages 12–34 is being reached by YouTube. It was as well perceived that some talented Filipino’s were discovered at youtube in which a lot of people showcase their talent and personality.

YouTube has created influential people. These people were realized to be influential due to the number of their subscribers (people watching constantly on their YouTube videos and channel). One people known at YouTube is Ryan Higa (aka Nigahiga). Ryan has a total of 9,837,950 active subscribers and still growing.

YouTube as e-class
YouTube now has been influential enough that the University State of California had used YouTube as a form of class set-up. It has been formalized to be a formal subject for Cultural Sociology and Filmography at the State University of Nebraska.

In a public school in Los Angeles, tutorial classes for English were opened under a YouTube channel which was conceptualized as a practice-application type of study for students in 6th and 7th grade. The literature studies for 8th and 9th grades were presented over a short film for better understanding. A test was conducted over and pertinent evidence shows that the story entitled “A Cask of Amontillado,” a literature by Edgar Allan Poe, was more understood.

Practical examinations were done as well by teachers in northern Alaska over YouTube videos with the use of annotations as option providers. Tutorials for music classes were more realized after watching a practical demonstration of video at the said site. Making videos as a project for English and Literature classes pushes students to understand and take a more effective and realistic point of view.

This medium has been effective in honing skills and talents such as: acting, speaking abilities, technical skills (for editing videos), singing, dancing and many more.

Interactive Shortfilms
Interactive shortfilms are films under a specific range of time less than an hour and are said to be ‘option providing’ or ‘story involving’ since interactions are made end a specific story.

Practically life has many options and we never know what will happen till we get there. Now with these types of films, we are putting the capability to re-tell and create a story on the hands of the watchers. With the use of annotations, the films may give them several options to continue a story of a specific film. If this would be given as a project for students, the growth they may gain in analytical thinking will be greater.
Famous YouTubers like Lana Mckissack and Filipino YouTube Couple JAMICH used this type of filming process and ends up with a large impact on how their watchers would see and re-tell a story. Setting up options gives the thrill to viewers as how the story may end. This learning scheme would definitely be a perfect match for graders since most kids effectively learn interactively.
