10 Interesting Things About Dolphy

Rodolfo Vera Quizon Jr., popularly known as Dolphy, was born on July 25, 1928 in Calle Padre Herrera (now P. Herrera St.) in Tondo, Manila. He is the eldest of ten (10) children. He is also known as Pidol and Golay in the Philippine show business, being a comedian-actor in the country.
           
The following are some interesting things about Dolphy:

1. Dolphy shined shoes, worked at a pants factory, hauled heavy loads at the pier, and drove a calesa. At one point, he even made money by sorting bottles. (spot.ph)

2. His father was Melencio Espinosa-Quizon, a ship mechanic, and his mother was Salud Vera Quizon. (imdb.com)

3. Golay was his first stage name and he started performing on stage during the Japanese occupation in the Philippines. He was turning 17 when Benny Mack got him a job as a chorus dancer for a month. (wikipedia.org)

4. When he was 19 he had his first movie with Fernando Poe Jr. in “Dugo at Bayan” (I Remember Bataan), billed as Rodolfo Quizon. On a DZMM radio interview, he revealed that his first talent fee was 5 pesos. (interaksyon.com)

5. “John en Marsha” started in 1971 on RPN Channel 9. Eventually, Dolphy got the part of John. John en Marsha was such a hit that movie versions of the show were made eight times. (inquirer.net)

6. Dolphy was also cast in “Home Along Da Riles” in 1992 with Nova Villa, as his wife, and real son Vandolph, as one of his children. The show continued in 2003 as “Home Along Da Airport.” (weebly.com)

7. In an interview aired on GMA-7, Dolphy’s grandson, Rowell Quizon revealed that the Comedy King had actually bought the bronze coffin used in his funeral way back in 1976. (spot.ph)

8. Dolphy had 18 children from six different women, six children with Grace Dominguez, four with Gloria Smith, four with Baby Smith, one with Vangie Tagulao, one with Alma Moreno, and two with Zsa Zsa Padilla (one of whom was adopted). (whosdatedwho.com)

9. Dolphy is also famous for playing gay characters in movies like “Facifica Falayfay” in 1969, “Fefita Fofongay, Sarhento Fofongay” in 1973, “A... Ewan” (Oh…I Don’t Know) in 1974, “Ang Tatay Kong Nanay” (My Dad The Mom) in 1978, and “Markova: Comfort Gay” in 2001. (rappler.com)

10. Dolphy died on July 10, 2012, 20:34, at the age of 83 due to multiple organ failure, secondary to complications brought about by pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and acute renal failure. (bakitwhy.com)
